Does COVID-19 darken your skin?

It has been 6 months since the inception of this bizarre and deadly pandemic and we are yet to know a lot of things pertaining to the COVID-19.

Right from its cause and cure to its symptoms and how it is spread, there are a lot of unanswered questions to which scientists around the world are trying to find an answer to.

While, currently, there is a list of symptoms to determine the virus, not all the symptoms have been concluded. Some of its symptoms range from fever and cough to chest pain, headache, and sore throat. However, recently, loss of smell and taste was also added to the list of COVID-19 symptoms.

That is how mysterious the virus is, in spite of all the research that is happening. There is so much we are yet to learn about it than we already know.

To support it, in a rather bizarre turn of events, back in April 18, 2020, Beijing TV, a local Chinese media broadcasted that two of their doctors who were fighting the virus in Wuhan Central Hospital since the outbreak have contracted the virus. In the report, it was mentioned that the skin of both the affected doctors became dark. The images were also released by the media.

Since then the images have become viral on Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, and many more social media sites and media have also started reporting that one of the effects of COVID-19 is the change in skin pigmentation.

However, there is only little truth to this as the change in skin color, in this case, was temporary. Let us look at what exactly happened.

In January 2020, when the outbreak started, two doctors at the Wuhan Central Hospital, a Cardiologist, Dr. Yi Fan, and Urologist, Dr. Hu Weifeng have contracted the virus while treating affected patients. Since then, their condition got deteriorated and both of them were placed on life support machines for over 40 days.

While both doctors have shown signs of recovery since then, they have noticed that their skins have turned dark when they came to consciousness during recovery. Many expert doctors around the world have suggested that this change in color was due to the liver dysfunction, which is common when a viral disease is contracted.

This is due to the liver being unable to process the body’s waste as a result of contracting a viral disease like COVID-19. Darkening of skin also happens if you are affected with Liver Cirrhosis, which is a condition when the liver does not function properly due to long-term damage.

Chinese local media have also reported that the darkening of the skin in both the doctors was due to the drug administered to them to temporarily increase the iron in their blood. The name of the drug was not mentioned.

Since then Dr. Yi Fan has successfully recovered and the color of his skin slowly started going back to its original tone. Unfortunately, his colleague is still hospitalized due to his condition being more serious.

Even if this is an isolated situation in China, it is something we need to be aware of, as scientists and researchers around the world are trying to fully understand COVID-19.
