What are Piles (or) Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are swellings in the rectum or around the anus that are made up of enlarged and inflamed blood vessels.

These are entirely normal; however they can sometimes turn into piles. The most common appearance is small, round & discolored lumps. They may be felt on your anus or hanging from your anal canal. If you ignore and do not go for piles treatment, your untreated hemorrhoids will continue to cause you pain and may even get worse.

How are piles diagnosed?

External hemorrhoids may be visible to your doctor but internal hemorrhoids can be diagnosed by examining your anal canal and rectum digitally. Sometimes hemorrhoids can be diagnosed simply by looking at your anus but your doctor may conduct a digital examination to check for any abnormalities within the anus to begin the treatment. Digital rectal examination involves inserting a gloved and lubricated finger into your rectum.

Your doctor may recommend an additional test, such as an anoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy, according to your risk factors for gastrointestinal disease. Your doctor will use a small camera to diagnose any abnormalities in your anus, rectum, or colon with each of these examinations. So the piles treatment can be accurate.

Symptoms of Piles:

The following are some of the symptoms:

1. Itching around the anus

2. Pain when you sit

3. Sore or tender hard lumps near the anus

4. Mucus discharge,

5. Bleeding without pain.

6. Bright red blood after you poop

7. Feeling like going to defecate even after using the toilet

8. Fecal leakage

9. Painful bowel movements

10. Rectal bleeding

What are possible complications of Piles?

Though piles can be painful and chronic, they rarely cause complications. In rare situations, a thrombosed hemorrhoid may rupture; causing further bleeding and pain, but the ruptured region usually recovers by itself. A skin tag might develop where a thrombosed hemorrhoid has healed in some situations.

Ignoring piles treatment can lead to the following complications:

  1. Strangulation
  2. Anemia
  3. Prolapse
  4. Blood clots
  5. Infection

Types of Piles:

  1. Internal
  2. External
  3. Prolapsed
  4. Thrombosis

Actually, there are four different types of Piles, knowing which one you have is crucial to obtaining safety and success.

1) Internal:

Internal hemorrhoids are a type of hemorrhoid that develops inside the rectum. Hemorrhoids of this kind usually go away on their own and are commonly asymptomatic due to their position. Internal hemorrhoids sometimes cause discomfort in patients because of their volume. Pain, itching, and burning are common symptoms of Piles.

2) External:

When most people think of hemorrhoids, they picture external hemorrhoids. These appear as visible or tactile lumps on the anus. Internal and external hemorrhoids are distinguished simply by their position; however, it can make a huge difference. Internal hemorrhoids may go unresolved whereas external hemorrhoids frequently cause a slew of unpleasant symptoms until they are resolved. Itching, burning, and pain that occur during physical activity, sitting, or bowel movements are the most typical symptoms reported by patients.

3) Prolapsed:

Internal hemorrhoids that have protruded from the anus are referred to as prolapsed hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids can prolapse under certain circumstances, such as straining during a bowel movement, but they usually gain back on their own. The patient can push the prolapse back in, however it is sometimes too painful to do so.

4) Thrombosis:

Internal or external hemorrhoids that have produced a blood clot are called thrombosed hemorrhoids. Intense itching, burning, discomfort, redness, and swelling are common symptoms of a thrombosed hemorrhoid, which are often more intense than usual. The area surrounding the hemorrhoid may also turn blue. To avoid blood loss and damage to the surrounding tissue, immediate treatment is necessary.

Risk Factors of Piles:

It is a common problem that can affect both men and women of all ages. These are caused by repeated high blood pressure in the veins. Of course, sophisticated Laser treatments are possible due to technological advancements.

The following are some of the reasons why people suffer from Piles:

  1. Pregnancy
  2. Obesity
  3. Straining while having a bowel movement
  4. Having diarrhea or Constipation
  5. Using too many laxatives
  6. Getting older (As you get older, your tissues lose their strength and flexibility)
  7. Standing or Sitting for long periods
  8. Eating a low-fiber diet
  9. Regularly Lifting heavy objects

What surgical options are there for piles treatment?

There are several types of piles treatments available, all of which aim to relieve symptoms and provide much-needed comfort.

The following are a few of the most widely used piles treatment:

  1. Rubber band ligation
  2. Sclerotherapy
  3. Infrared photocoagulation
  4. Electrocoagulation
  5. Hemorrhoidectomy
  6. Hemorrhoid stapling

How is laser surgery for piles better than conventional (or) open surgery?

  1. Laser surgery is painless, whereas open surgery causes considerable agony for 2-3 days following the procedure.
  2. There is no bleeding during laser piles treatment, but there is bleeding during open surgery.
  3. Open surgery has the risk of recurrence, however laser surgery does not.
  4. Laser surgery is a day-care procedure that takes about 30 minutes to complete. The patient can go home the same day after surgery whereas open surgery takes about a week to recover and sometimes if the patient's wound becomes infected or bleeds again, he or she may need to stay in the hospital.
  5. In contrast to open surgery, where the surgeon makes a long cut for operation, laser surgery leaves no scar or wound.
  6. For open surgery, a prescribed diet must be followed, but not for laser surgery.
  7. Usually for open surgery, 1-2 months of rest is required, but after laser surgery, 2-3 days of rest is sufficient.

How long do Piles Take to Heal?

There is no such thing as a set time for it to heal because it is dependent on many factors. Small hemorrhoids may go away on their own within a few days and even without any piles treatment but external (or) large hemorrhoids can take a long time to heal and cause a lot of pain and discomfort. It's recommended to consult a doctor if your hemorrhoids haven't gone away after a few days. So that piles treatment can be done effectively.
